How public schools are organized in New Hanover County, NC — districts, specialty programs, early college options, and the official sources to check ratings and zoning for yourself.

How Public Schools Work in the Wilmington Area

If you're relocating to Wilmington, one of the first things you'll want to understand is how our public schools are organized. North Carolina runs its schools differently than many other states, so here's a factual overview to get you oriented — along with the official sources you can use to research ratings, zoning, and programs for yourself.

North Carolina organizes schools by county

The entire county falls under one district: New Hanover County Schools (NHCS). There is no separate "Wilmington City" district. Your home address determines your zoned school, and you can look up the zoned school for any address using the official NHCS school locator.

Specialty and signature programs

Rather than a single magnet school, NHCS comprehensive high schools each host signature programs and academies that students across the district can apply to. These include an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, STEM academies, a marine science academy run in partnership with UNCW, and Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways. Specific offerings, seat counts, and application windows are set by the district and change year to year — the NHCS Signature Programs office publishes current details and deadlines.

Early college options

New Hanover County offers early college programs where students can graduate with college credit:

Isaac Bear Early College — located on the UNCW campus; students can earn transferable UNCW credits alongside their diploma. Application is during 8th grade.

Wilmington Early College — based at Cape Fear Community College; a multi-year program where students can earn an Associate's degree alongside their diploma, tuition-free.

Charter schools

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that run their own enrollment lotteries and are not tied to a specific address. Several operate in the Wilmington area. Because availability and grade levels vary, check each school's website directly for current enrollment information.

How to research schools yourself

I always encourage families to evaluate schools using objective, official sources rather than relying on any one person's characterization:
