Brunswick County: Instagram Follows, Beaches, & Historic Southport

Cross the Cape Fear River heading south and you enter Brunswick County — which quietly holds more coastline, and more distinct beach towns, than anywhere else around Wilmington. This is the fastest-growing county in the whole state, and once you spend a weekend hopping from an island lighthouse to a seafood shack to a Fourth of July parade older than the country's bicentennial, you understand why.

Who to follow to stay in the know

These are the verified accounts I'd start with for anything Brunswick:

NC's Brunswick Islands — @ncbrunswickislands — the regional tourism account and best single source for events across all the beaches

Brunswick County Government — @brunswickcountync — the official county account for alerts, closures, and public meetings

Southport NC — @southportnc — scenes and happenings from the historic waterfront town

Bald Head Island — @bhislandnc — the official island account, worth a follow even just for the views

Town of Leland — @townoflelandnc — the official account for the county's fastest-growing mainland town

For the individual beach towns (Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle, Sunset Beach) and the signature festivals, the town government websites and @ncbrunswickislands carry the most current parking, closure, and event details — that regional account reliably reshares the big beach happenings.

The beaches (yes, all of them)

Brunswick's islands each have their own personality, so the "right" one really comes down to the lifestyle you're after.

Oak Island is the big, laid-back workhorse of the group — a long island with an actual year-round community, its own iconic lighthouse, family-friendly beaches facing south, and a genuinely broad range of price points. Neighboring Caswell Beach shares the island's east end and stays quiet and residential.

Bald Head Island is the splurge — a car-free island reached only by ferry from Southport, where you get around by golf cart, climb 200-year-old "Old Baldy" (the state's oldest lighthouse), and trade convenience for serious tranquility. It's a lifestyle statement as much as an address.

Holden Beach is the classic family island — clean, calm, and famously low-key, the kind of place families return to for generations.

Ocean Isle Beach is a bit livelier, with a compact, walkable center, the annual Oyster Festival, and a strong vacation-rental market.

Sunset Beach anchors the southern tip near the South Carolina line — the smallest and sleepiest of the bunch, with the beloved Bird Island coastal reserve and its "Kindred Spirit" mailbox a barefoot walk away.

The mainland towns worth knowing

Southport is the crown jewel — a historic waterfront town of tree-lined streets, a working yacht basin, antique shops, and Cape Fear views that have made it a Hallmark-movie and film-crew favorite. It's walkable, deeply charming, and the launch point for the Bald Head and Fort Fisher ferries.

Calabash, right on the South Carolina border, is the self-proclaimed "Seafood Capital of the World" — a tiny fishing village whose name became a whole style of lightly breaded, fried seafood.

Leland is the mainland growth engine — just across the river from downtown Wilmington, it's one of the most popular landing spots for relocating buyers who want new construction, easy commutes, and more square footage for the money. Shallotte and Bolivia round out the county's inland hubs, with Bolivia home to the county government seat.

The festivals that define the coast

Brunswick's event calendar punches well above its weight:

NC 4th of July Festival (Southport, late June–July 4) — This is the big one. Southport has hosted North Carolina's official Fourth of July celebration every year since 1972 (with roots back to 1795), drawing tens of thousands for a week-plus of parades, concerts, arts and crafts, patriotic ceremonies, and fireworks over the Cape Fear. If you live anywhere nearby, plan around the crowds — and go at least once.

NC Oyster Festival (Ocean Isle Beach, October) — A four-decade Brunswick tradition (its 45th year in 2026, October 17–18) featuring oysters every way, an oyster stew cook-off, shucking contest, music, and arts and crafts.

NC Festival by the Sea (Holden Beach, October) — A beloved coastal arts-and-crafts festival (October 24–25 in 2026) with local makers, live entertainment, contests, food, and children's activities right in the heart of the island.

Add in Oak Island's summer concert series, Southport's year-round waterfront events, and Calabash's seafood scene, and there's genuinely always something happening south of the river.
