Getting the lights on and the water running should be near the top of your list. Try to set these up a week or two before your move-in date.

Electricity: Duke Energy handles power for the Wilmington area. Set up or transfer service at duke-energy.com.

Water & sewer: Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) serves much of New Hanover County. Start service at cfpua.org.

Natural gas: Piedmont Natural Gas provides gas service in the region. Set up at piedmontng.com.

Handle your NC driver's license & vehicle registration

Here's an important one that sneaks up on new residents: North Carolina gives you a limited window (generally 60 days after establishing residency) to get your NC driver's license and register your vehicle. Appointments book up fast, so schedule early.

Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and proof of North Carolina residency. Check the DMV site for the current, exact document list before you go.

Get familiar with schools

If you've got kids (or just want to understand the area), school assignment in North Carolina is generally based on your exact home address. A word of friendly advice: always verify a home's school assignment directly with the district before you make a housing decision, because boundaries, policies, and availability can change.
